Starting Training

I have had a lot of people ask me, what do I need to start training? As a no-gi Jiu Jitsu school, the answer is usually pretty brief and easy. I tell everyone the same thing:

Shorts and a T-shirt are perfect. We don’t wear shoes on our mats so wear socks if you are uncomfortable being barefoot. Bring water and, if you have one, a mouth guard.
(Obviously, if the caller is looking for kickboxing information, I have a bit more equipment to mention)

I seem to forget the most important thing that new members need to remember when they start training. They need to come in with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. I’ve seen, over the past few years, that the people who get the most out of their first few classes are the people who come in with no expectations. They don’t assume that they will be a black belt within 6 months. They come in wanting to improve their health and flexibility. They come in wanting to reach fitness goals.
